Praise for the Global Accountability Report (GAR) PDF Print E-mail

“At the mid-point to 2015, the target agreed by world leaders for the achievement of the eight Millennium Development Goals, UNDP welcomes the opportunity to be independently and professionally assessed, alongside other global organizations, by the One World Trust as part of its Global Accountability Assessment exercise. This report demonstrates UNDP’s commitment to strengthening our culture of accountability while we continue our work of combating extreme poverty. UNDP finds the key dimensions of the Global Accountability Framework -- transparency, participation, evaluation and complaint/response management -- to be particularly useful and instructive. The Framework independently validates UNDP’s current work and sheds light on areas of possible improvement. This feedback is critical to UNDP’s continued progress in this area and adherence to the best practices of accountability.”
Kemal Derviş, Administrator, UNDP

"UNICEF welcomes the opportunity to be part of the 2008 Global Accountability Report.  It helps to reinforce the shared principles and values of accountability among international partners and validate on-going improvement efforts."
Ann M. Veneman, Executive Director, UNICEF

“At the EBRD, we are committed to the principles of accountability and transparency in our operations as a way of promoting good governance in our region. We appreciate the work of the One World Trust in promoting these principles in the public and private sectors and also among civil society organisations. We are very pleased with the results of the 2008 Global Accountability Report which acknowledges our ongoing efforts to enhance accountability while at the same time to respect the confidentiality considerations of our predominantly private sector clients. The Report also provides us with useful insight and advise on how we could do even better.”
Thomas Mirow, President, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development

"Transparency and accountability are fundamental to how we do business at IFC.  I believe that independent evaluation drives best practice, innovation, and builds public trust.  The Global Accountability Report is an important tool that helps organizations re-examine their effectiveness and accountability to stakeholders. We can all learn from this process”.
Lars Thunell, Executive Vice President and CEO, International Finance Corporation

“We at IOM are always looking for ways to improve and we welcome independent assessments of our work.  As the report itself says, IOM has grown so much in the past 10 years, our policies and management systems have not kept pace.  We are working to remedy this and the analysis, suggestions and examples of good practice in the Global Accountability Report will be invaluable as we move ahead. We do however need adequate resources for our core structure to be able to move ahead effectively with the necessary changes.”
Ambassador William Lacy Swing, Director General, IOM

“ActionAid continues to place the highest priority on improving transparency and accountability. During 2007 we conducted a review of our Accountability, Learning, and Planning System (ALPS), identifying concrete actions to deepen our transparency and accountability, including an audit of compliance with our Open Information Policy, and a specific objective for each Director to ensure ALPS is applied at all levels. Following the recommendations from the One World Trust report, we developed a complaints and response mechanism to ensure that we learn and act when external parties or staff witness and report complaints or blow the whistle on any bad practice. In 2008, we are putting particular emphasis on the full implementation of our open information policy, our complaints and response mechanism and securing transparency at all levels of our work."
Ramesh Singh, Chief Executive, ActionAid

“We have learned that reaching out and involving our stakeholders early in decision-making helps us run our operations better and maintain our license to operate, especially on the more difficult projects that our industry is naturally being driven to. We welcome the latest Global Accountability Report and the work of the One World Trust in promoting accountability not only for companies but, importantly for a wide range of other organisations as well.”
Roxanne Decyk, Director Corporate Affairs, Royal Dutch Shell plc

"It is important for all organisations to be accountable and GSK aims to be open and transparent. This report is a brave attempt at the extremely challenging task of making comparative assessments across different sectors. I am proud that GSK’s performance is rated ahead of many of our peers but this analysis should make us all reflect on how well we are serving those we need to answer to.”
Dr Jean-Pierre Garnier, Chief Executive Officer, GlaxoSmithKline

“As an organisation that operates in the public interest we are committed to achieving the highest levels of transparency and accountability throughout our operations. We welcome the findings of this report and its assessment of our progress made to date.”
Sir David Tweedie, Chairman, International Accounting Standards Board

"The Global Accountability Report provides a comprehensive and innovative methodology that illuminates the strengths and weaknesses of global actors towards their stakeholders – to us.”
Elio Villaseñor Gómez, Executive Director, Iniciativa Cuidadana para la Promoción de ña Cultura del Diálogo, A.C., Mexico

“Accountability is a prerequisite to any process aiming at improving political systems and living conditions. Holding accountable all the actors; governments, businesses, and civil society, is core to any reform process and an important step towards an effective performance.

Elaborating indexes to measure accountability is an effective analytical and monitoring tool to evaluate governance and institutional strategies. Disseminating the results among all the stakeholders and to the public empowers participation and strengthens legitimacy.

All the above is embodied in the initiative of the annual Global Accountability Report. The report presents a means for engaging institutions towards improving responsible and effective national, regional, and global governance processes.
‘One World Trust’, thank you.”
Ziad Abdel Samad, Executive Director, Arab NGO Network for Development
