Assessment
The Montreux Initiative was established to seek a means to avoid limiting genuine charitable donations to Islamic organisations in the wake of September 11, 2001 and subsequent anti-terrorist financing legislation in many countries. The effort also included recommendations to governments on how to avoid stifling Islamic charitable giving. This initiative provides an example of CSO self-regulation being developed alongside government regulation.
